Life support courses have been a very powerful force
in driving up standards of resus in the UK IMHO.
Having said that, 'badging' is to be resisted strongly
and I would like to add two reasons to those already
given:
1. The well known effect on registrars in Emergency
Medicine in the UK - must get instructor status, if
you don't give me it I won't get a job. Encourages
those uninterested in teaching to pretend otherwise,
and the belligerent to dispute the non-awarding of
instructor potential status. Adverts stating specific
course instructor status as a requirement for a post
are to be deplored.
2. Looking ahead, all courses have a natural life span
( personally I think ATLS (the expensive 3 day course,
not the principles)is long past its sell by date.
'Badging' prevents anyone else coming up with a better
course as the demand will not be there when competing
against a badged course.
