might be interested. One of the positions is looking for Quantitative
skills (e.g. survey-based methodologies, GIS skills and so on) so is likely to
be of interest to postgrads / postdocs from the social sciences as well as
Marketing / business students. The other position is looking for Qualitative
skills, including ethnographic methods, so is likely to be of interest largely
to postgrad / postdocs from social sciences. The PhD studentship will
investigate an aspect of the larger project, but the precise topic will be
determined through discussion.

ESRC-Funded Project 'Retail Competition & Consumer Choice: Long-term change &
household dynamics'
This major 30 month inter-disciplinary research is led by Professor Ian Clarke
(Department of Marketing, Lancaster University Management School) in
collaboration with Professor Peter Jackson (Department of Geography,
University of Sheffield) and Professor Alan Hallsworth (Division of
Geography, University of Staffordshire). The project will explore the
implications of local retail competition for consumer choice employing
survey and ethnographic research. All post-holders will undertake
fieldwork in Portsmouth.
Quantitative Research Assistant/ Associate (18 months) Ref: A463
You will have a good social science degree, relevant postgraduate
experience and well-developed skills in quantitative research. The post will
involve quantitative and survey-based research of shopping activities.
Supervision will be provided by Professors Hallsworth and Clarke.
Qualitative Research Assistant/ Associate (30 months) Ref: A464
You will have a good social science degree, relevant postgraduate
experience and well-developed skills in qualitative research. The post will
involve fieldwork and qualitative analysis at the household level.
Supervision will be provided by Professor Peter Jackson.
PhD Studentship (3 years) min. £6,500 p.a. plus UK-level fees
Candidates with a good undergraduate or masters level social science
