That's basically what Prof Verna Wright said 10 years ago. He was head of the Bioengineering group at leeds University. They found that athletes who had menisci removed were X times likely to develop athritis. (I can't remember the exact figure, but I think it was well over 50%). They reported that it was now common pravtice to only remove the damaged part and leave as much left in as possible.
He also pointed out that the menisci were once thought to be a 'vestigal organ' - one not needed - in fact a point that was used to build up the case of evolution. Just goes to show you can't believe everything you were taught at school.
