So I guess that means that tools such as search engines and content
management systems are going to have to support all 3?
I don't expect this to happen, no, although I can imagine some fairly
straightforward algorithms that might be able to extract basic indexing from
each.
What I expect is more likely to happen is that various sectors will converge
on one or another of the technologies and that as the benefits of
convergeance begin to have obvious economic ramifications, the marketplace
will reflect that.
Adobe has adopted the RDF idiom. Imagine for a moment Microsoft Word,
Macromedia web tools, Adobe Acrobat and Photoshop all having metadata tools
that can export interoperable metadata. Search engines looking for
harvestable metadata would find increasing amounts of useful data. It seems
likely to me that we would have reached critical mass as regards the tools.
