I was about to post the list to break our long silence when suddenly
everything burst into life once more. Still, here goes:
While passing St Osyth's Well at Bierton, Aylesbury, a few days ago, I
discovered to my surprise that it had been completely restored! The
Parish Council secured a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund for the
purpose. The previously-existing low drum-shaped building was built up
and the cap removed to reveal the water, now secured behind iron
railings. The area around has been landscaped into a small garden with
bench and an interpretative panel. I can't recall this being reported
anywhere, although somebody on the list may have seen it.
I further wonder whether anyone heard a programme on Radio 4 on Monday
afternoon (8th) which featured a visit to a 'St John the Baptist's Well'
in Somerset as part of a general discussion of wells which occupied
about 15 minutes. It was reported to me, but I know no more about it
than that.
