Now that is interesting! Not least because I had no
idea you have slate mines in Oxfordshire!
You can visit the biggest cavern/deepest slate mine in
the World in Blaenau Ffestiniog, North Wales (beats one
in Thuringia, Germany by a whisker) but when they first
opened it to tourists they had several cases of
hypothermia! There are now written warnings about
babies and elderly folk going down without adequate
warm clothing, especially on hot days - however rare
they are! People with heart conditions, pacemakers,
etc. are also discouraged from taking the tour.
