Some time ago we learnt that Jacob’s Well at Bristol included a medieval
Mitvah or Jewish Bath, the only one known in the UK at the time. Recently
the Daily Telegraph (25 Oct) ran an editorial on another one discovered in
the old Jewish quarter of the City of London. . It was built before the
expulsion of the Jews in 1290 and was found in the cellar of a house in Milk
Street. It is made of finely cut Greensand stone, is semi-circular and about
four feet wide and four feet deep. There are steps leading down into the
bath.
For more details have a look at the news and views page on the SRF web site
at www.thespas.co.uk I will post a more detailed editorial later today.
If you have any news let me have details and I can post it on the SRF site
also.
