Insider's guide to Social inclusion: European, national and local
perspectives
Friday 2 November 2001
Smith Square, Westminster, London
Dear colleague,
The LGIB is organising a seminar to explore the role of the EU in promoting
social inclusion, with particular emphasis on the recently published
National Action Plan on social inclusion.
The seminar comes four months after the submission of the UK National Action
Plan, and will serve as an early opportunity for key practitioners to
exchange views on the UK strategy. The main objective is to share experience
and good practice in local government approaches to social inclusion and to
examine the implications of the new EU approach to this field. The
Commission recognises that social exclusion has a local and national nature,
and success of its strategy to overcome poverty and deprivation will depend
on linking different policy initiatives. The event will be of interest to
local authority chief executives, elected members and officers, European
Officers as well as non governmental organisations in the field of poverty
and social inclusion and academics.
Our key note speaker, The Rt Hon Alastair Darling MP, Secretary of State for
Work and Pensions, will be joined by:
* Armindo Silva, Head of Unit, Social protection and inclusion
policies, DG Employment and Social Affairs, European Commission
* Claude Moraes MEP, Employment and Social Affairs Committee, European
Parliament
* Stephen Effingham, Department for Work and Pensions
* Cllr Chris Clarke, Chair, Local Government Association Social
Inclusion executive
Attached you will find an introductory letter, a draft programme and a
registration form.
If you would like any further information please don't hesitate to contact
