italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
>Lorenzo Enriques:
"una convenzione lessicografica internazionale, non solo italiana:
ad esempio il Collins English Dictionary registra il lemma 'actor or
(fem.) actress.'"
Actress" e' inaccettabile perche' e' un gender marked term.
Cito da Marilyn Schwartz, *Guidelines for Bias-Free Writing*
(Bloomington: Indiana UP, 1995) 21-23.
Most English agent-nouns have a common-gender form applicable
to both sexes: aviator, doctor, usher. The addition of feminine
suffixes such as -trix, -ess, and -ette causes the common-gender form
to acquire a predominantly masculine sense, while the feminine form
(aviatrix, doctoress, usherette) becomes an auxiliary term. In such
masculine/feminine pairings the feminine form often takes on a
trivializing or pejorative connotation: poet/poetess, master/mistress.
