The University of Liverpool
in collaboration with the
English Subject Centre (LTSN)
presents a study day on
Plagiarism
(2nd November, 2001, 10:30am-4pm)
Plagiarism has become a pressing concern at a time when
students have increased access to internet essays and other
resources which make it difficult for lecturers to prove plagiarism
quickly and definitively. This event will allow lecturers to evaluate
electronic and practical means for identifying and deterring
plagiarism. It will also develop discussions about how we respond
to plagiarism once it has been identified.
While delegates will be invited to consider issues concerned with
the detection and punishment of plagiarism, they will also be asked
to consider whether or not they can improve their communication
with students about this issue: are lecturers agreed on what counts
as plagiarism, within departments and within the discipline? How
clear is the information given to students about plagiarism, and how
are students helped to identify proper uses of secondary texts and
lecture notes? At school, students are encouraged to rely heavily
on ideas and materials produced by others, and the internet has
helped to foster a culture based on information. How do we help
students to make the transition to a culture where plagiarism is
punishable, and how can we communicate effectively about the
differences between information and knowledge?
We welcome the submission of brief discussion papers, and of
specific examples of (anonymised) plagiarism cases for discussion
at the event. The discussion will cover plagiarism issues as they
affect staff and students in Literature, Language and Creative
Writing Studies.
