Just to add a couple of things.
I used the excellent statistical resources that Andy sent us to
yesterday and although I didn't take a note of it, I found the PPP for
Georgia to be around $2,800 I think ... not sure of the date.
I was walking along the street today and saw that fresh carrots were
selling for 13 pence a kilogramme: taking one twentieth of a day's work
to pay for that, following yesterday's analysis.
Chris Rodda makes a good point that some people find very difficult to
cope with: that poverty and discussions about poverty take in all and
sundry. Here in Georgia there are some fabulously wealthy people and
there are some incredibly poor people. I notice that various estimates
show that anywhere between 50% and 60% of Georgians live below the
poverty line, yet Tbilisi is absolutely heaving with cars and buses, the
shops are full of goods, including some very expensive foreign clothes,
perfumes, cars, white goods ...

Duncan - very interesting data. I have just looked up the World
Development
Report 2000-01 to find the purchasing power parity data for the
countries
concerned. There may be data for 2000 now, this is for 1999 in US $.
GNP at PPP world ranking
Georgia 3,606 122
Vietnam 1,755 160
Sierra Leone 414 206
