Surely a construct like dcq:created without a surrounding dc:date
will only work if the element refinement name is used to qualify
only one element, ie. it is unique in the qualifier namespace. This
may be true at present, but I think it conceivable that, in the future,
more than one DC element could have a refinement qualifier of the
same name.
One problem with going down the 'dateCreated' route is the same
as that for the dot notation - the names become very long.
Also, there was another email discussion on dc-general in the last
few days where:
On 2001-10-01 Andy Powell wrote as an example:
<dc:format>
<dcterms:extent scheme="ISO8601">
PT0H15M4S
</dcterms:extent>
</dc:format>
'created' and 'extent' are both element refinements, but one is
shown as in the 'dcq' namespace and the other in 'dcterms'. Is 'dcq'
a synonym for 'dcterms' or will it be deprecated?
I, for one, am feeling rather confused, and that I'm having to run to
keep up. Things become obsolete as soon as I implement them.
['dcterms' was 'dct' only a short while ago.] Some clarification
would help. Consistency between documents will be needed once
this is settled.
Just to muddy the waters still further, I recently came across the
following example. I realise it could just be someone being
optimistic.
<dctype:collection>...</dctype:collection>
where 'dctype' is the namespace for the DCMI Type Vocabulary.
I was under the impression that the DCMI Type Vocabulary is a
controlled list of names for use as values of dc:type when qualified
with this scheme. But this seems to be using all 'things' defined in
DC namespaces as first-class objects which can be used as DC
properties (and hence as XML element names). Would this
construct be approved as appropriate DC usage? It's obviously
useful if you need a schema to define a collection.
Best wishes,
Ann
