I am appalled that in response to the New York massacre and
imminent war on Afghanistan a member of this mailing list is blindy
promoting the website a vile reactionary Islamic fundamentalist
organisation, Hizb-ut Tahrir. Indeed selling it as if this organisation
were in some way 'progressively anti-capitalist'. As a socialist I
oppose both a likely war, imperialism and fundamentalism.
Although I take seriously the racist and xenophobic backlash of
recent events, I am willing to separate out my opposition to racism
and my criticisms of Islamic fundamentalism and imperialism.
Afterall, it is the left, many trade unionists, students and women in
countries such as Iran and Afghanistan that oppose and are
fighting both. So lets not like Bush, Blair, the SWP and many
others neatly divide the world into good camp versus bad camp,
imperialism versus anti-imperialism.
Critical perspective and real debate is necessarily, and
organisations like Hizb-ut Tahir would sooner see people like me
banished.
