'TEARMANN'
The Irish journal of agri-environmental research
Tearmann will carry papers and shorter notices of current research,
review articles, as well as comment, book review, news on policy and
developments that relate to the rural environment. There will be a
particular emphasis on the publication of research that contributes to
the practical management and enhancement of natural and cultural
diversity in the rural environment. The emphasis will be on scientific
research, but articles of a historical, geographical or other nature will
be considered where they shed light on agri-environmental
management.
Contributions which relate to the Journal's aim of enhancing the
natural and cultural diversity of the Irish rural environment through
better understanding and practice are invited. Papers should be
clearly written and capable of being understood both by academic and
non-specialists in rural environmental management.
The Journal is published by the Faculty of Agriculture at University
College Dublin in association with Teagasc (the Irish food and
agriculture development authority).
The old Irish word 'tearmann' (in English 'termon') embodied the
concept of land under protection, or land which provided refuge or
sanctuary, usually on behalf of the church, whose concern for the
community extended to values other than the merely productive. It is
an appropriate banner under which to assemble research whose
basic aim is to further our understanding of the Irish rural
environment, and of ways to enhance it.
