Vacancy No. ED/34/01

RESEARCH OFFICER (UPLAND ENTOMOLOGIST)

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral
entomologist to work on a project entitled "Effects of
grazing management on upland bird populations:
disentangling habitat structure and arthropod food
supply at appropriate spatial scales". This project is
being conducted by a consortium consisting of the
Macaulay Institute, Scottish Agricultural College,
Centre for Ecology and Hydrology and the Royal
Society for the Protection of Birds. The invertebrate
component of the research will be conducted by this
post based within the Conservation & Ecology
Department at SAC Auchincruive.

The person appointed will organise and manage all
laboratory and field aspects of the invertebrate work,
supervise casual staff employed on a seasonal basis
to assist with fieldwork, collate the resulting
datasets, conduct appropriate analyses of the
results and liaise with the partner organisations and
the funding body. An essential goal is to ensure
that the project is brought to a satisfactory
conclusion by producing the appropriate
documentation (including annual reports and
refereed publications).

Candidates must demonstrate an understanding of
upland ecology and biodiversity issues by reference
to their career to-date and publications record. They
also need sampling and identification skills for
macroinvertebrates (particularly leatherjackets, foliar
caterpillars and/or plant bugs). Excellent
organisational, communication and IT skills will be
required. A current driving licence is essential. This
post is tenable for 3 years from 1 January 2002.

The salary scale is on Band 7: £17,000 - £26,400
per annum. Progression is related to performance.

Application forms and further particulars may be
obtained from the Personnel Unit, Scottish
Agricultural College, West Mains Road, Edinburgh
EH9 3JG. Telephone: (0131) 535 4343 (24 hour
answering machine), Fax: (0131) 535 4322, E-mail
[log in to unmask] or our website at
http://www.sac.ac.uk/jobvacancies . The closing
date for applications is 19 November 2001. Please
quote reference ED/34/01.
