I have just completed a 1 yr PRHO rotation doing 4 mths of A and E, Medicine
and Surgery and had realised the possible implications for the FRCS (A&E)
beforehand.
I looked like this would be a problem as you say, as this would add about
and extra year before being eligible for the exams. My Consultant at the
time looked into it and the last I heard was that they were planning to
change the regulations
from: 12 mths A and E, 12 Mths Surgery( 6mths as PRHO) and 12 mths Medicine
(6mths as PRHO),
to: - 12 mths A&E, 6mths post reg surgery, 6mths post reg medicine, and any
approved PRHO post - the total being the same, but allowing for PRHO
rotations. Have not had confirmation of this, but if not, had already
accepted the need for more SHO posts.

Subject: Composite house jobs and future ED docs
Short question from one of our med students that someone on the list may be
able to answer.
Recently, in Manchester and elsewhere, there are now many "composite" house
jobs that involve 4 months surgery, 4 months medicine and 4 months in a
speciality (e.g. paeds, ortho, EM, cardiology etc). These satisfy house
officer training requirements.
As far as I am aware the rules for doing the FRCS in Edinburgh (the A+E part
2) still state that you need to do a year of medicine and a year of surgery.
However, house jobs do count so most people only need to do a 6 month SHO
post in each. A few (rather too well planned) med students have asked if
these would subsequently count towards the faculty exam. If not they would
need to do 2 SHO posts in medicine and 2 in surgery. This is unlikely to be
popular!!
They do intend to contact the college but I thought the list may be a bit
more immediate.
