This message is to announce the DCMI Collection Description Working Group.
The charter of this Working Group states that it will:
- Provide a forum for sharing information about existing collection
description activities internationally.
- Develop a Dublin Core-based application profile for collection
description, including
- a metadata schema,
- a set of guidelines for the usage of that schema,
- an enumerated list of collection types.
- Explore possible mechanisms for mapping between different collection
description standards, including the development of appropriate crosswalks.
In this context, the term 'collection' is used to refer to any aggregation
of individual items. Those items may be physical items, digital surrogates
of physical items, 'born-digital' items, or the catalogues of such
collections (as aggregates of metadata records).
The DCMI Collection Description Working Group website is at
http://dublincore.org/groups/collections/
Discussions of this group's activities will take place on the Working Group
mailing list. Details are at
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/dc-collections.html
Unfortunately, there will be no f2f meeting of this Working Group at DC-2001
in Tokyo. However, Andy Powell of UKOLN, one of the co-chairs of the WG,
will be in attendance and will be happy to have informal discussions about
collection description and about the Working Group.
To launch this activity, we encourage anyone interested in this area to
subscribe to the WG mailing list above.
We welcome comments on the charter for the group, and we would specifically
like to hear from organisations, projects or initiatives who have developed
metadata schemas (DC-based or otherwise) for the description of collections.
All such information should be sent to the WG mailing list (not to
dc-general).
The UK Collection Description Focus, based at UKOLN, is collaborating with
CIMI, the museums consortium, in a survey of collection description
activity. See
http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/cd-focus/questionnaire/
for details. The results of their survey will also provide useful input for
the activity of the WG.
Hopefully, we will be able to move this activity forward after DC-2001.
Regards,
