There is a chapter in Sport injuries (diagnosis and management) by
Chtistopher M Norris
published by Butterworth & Heineman (ISBN 0-7506-2873-1)
it's well worth a read with some good ref's there in
As a ultra-distance runner (races greater than marthon distance genrally
50k and 100k)
I tend to use race shoes that last more than 500 miles (but this is
because I use them to train in after racing)
but my faster fellow runners say their road flats will last around 2
seasons (much less than 500 miles and are of no use for training)
In the club we use to feel that a good trainning shoe gave upto 1000
Miles (depending on the runners syle and weight)
But since the introduction of "air" pockets into most shoes we tend to
find that we get punchers! (tends to be glass etc on the roads) which
makes the shoes unuseable as they just collaspe on heel strike
