Dear Norman,
I understand your message more now. However one thing that made me think is
that one of the WTC bombers was an ordinary Moslem man, well loved by his
family, not from fundamentalist origins, just gentle and ordinary. Then,
after a few months in Afghanistan (when he disappeared from family contact
for several months) he became a bomber. His family are totally shocked. It
is possible these people are sought out and "programmed". I still feel UPR
for the man he was and wonder what happened to generate such a substantial
change - what about brainwashing/deprivation techniques etc. I still see it
as important to separate the person from their behaviour. By all means
abhor and punish the behaviour but not the soul within, misguided though it
may be. I do think one fundamental difference is that we, in the UK, have
been living with and accommodating terrorist behaviour and unpredictability
for many years - eg. no rubbish bins on the tube etc, and so have possibly
worked through te anger stage of loss of safety etc. What say others....?
Regards
Audrey
PS One none-therapist book that I think is pretty good to read is Gary
Zukav, The Seat of the Soul as it addresses some of these issues in a very
humanistic way!!!
