Dear Geoff and everyone,
>I was wondering what sort of issues this had raised for other peoples'
>clients. It certainly featured in several of the sessions I did yesterday.
>The feelings of vulnerability, sadness and helplessness were difficult, but
>understandable, but the one I found most confronting was "Serves the
>bastards right.". At a deeper level I think I know where this person is
>coming from and it's nothing to do with either psychopathology or
>international politics, but it struck me that it must have been difficult
>for this person to have this kind of response and feel so out of step with
>everyone else in the world.
The effect on my clients was varied. All of them mentioned it and two
resisted any attempt to explore their feelings about it. One client in
particular was very tearful when he talked about it and upon exploration
I found that he was upset that he had argued with his partner that
morning. "You should always be careful. You never know if you're going
to see your family again.."
This may be fanciful of me, but I am recalling clients' reactions to
Princess Diana's death.
For myself, I felt sick and tearful by turns. It was hard work
bracketing off but I managed it.

On Monday evening begins the Jewish New Year, when it is traditional to
pray and hope for peace for mankind. Alongside the scenes of horror
from New York and Washington will live in my mind the courage of the
ordinary American people as well as that of the firefighters and police.
And Mayor Giuliani's words will stay with me - enjoining New Yorkers to
volunteer if they could but not to be upset if they couldn't. Everyone
had work to do, he said, and most important was to look out for each
other, particularly the old people who would be very upset by this.
