italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Apologies for x-posting
I wonder if anyone could help me identify two poets, mentioned in a letter by
Tomaso Macchiavelli to Ottavio Farnese, written from Rome in 1574. Referring
to the singing of Leonora Sanvitale:
Quando accompagna poi la gratiosa voce al suono, trarria le rime,et inteneriria
al cuore, non pur di M. Gio. Fran.co Leone, Poeta antico, universale amante, ma
di Apollo di Belvedere.
Could this 'Leone' be G Battista Leoni (i.e. did he mistake the name, or did
Francesco Leone also exist)? and who is the Apollo of Belvedere?
regards
