LANGUAGES AND CURRICULUM 2000:
The Implications for Higher Education
19th October 2001, British Academy, London
New A level specifications in Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) aim
to 'provide a sufficient basis for the further study of modern foreign
languages at degree level or equivalent'
(http://www.qca.org.uk/nq/subjects/mfl.asp) but many colleagues
in Higher Education are still unclear about this new post-16
qualification. In October 2002, the first students to have followed
the Curriculum 2000, Advanced Subsidiary (AS) and Advanced (A)
Level MFL specifications will be entering university and this briefing
day aims to provide both a forum for the dissemination of
information and a discussion of the impact of the new curriculum.
Topics include:
- An overview of the aims and content of the AS and A-level
curricula;
- A review of the impact of Curriculum 2000 on the take-up of
languages in the post-16 age group;
- A presentation of the Key Skills components;
- A discussion of the revised points score system.
There will also be case studies from colleagues teaching in the
Further Education sector.
Speakers include:
- Kate Green (Qualifications and Curriculum Authority)
- Keith Marshall (University of Bangor)
- Dilly Fung (University of Southampton)
- Cathy Watts (University of Brighton)
The cost of the event will be £40, to include light refreshments.
