Markle Fellows at the Programme in Comparative Media Law and Policy,
Oxford University
Overview
This year the Markle Foundation has established a Markle Fellowship
program at the Programme in Comparative Media Law and Policy at the
Centre for Socio-Legal Studies. The Fellowship program will award
several long and short term fellowships to help outstanding scholars,
practitioners, and students from developing countries become further
involved in the debate over Internet regulation and governance, the
digital divide, convergence, and other media law areas. Applications
are sought from industry, university faculty members, employees of
government, private sector, international, and private research
institutions with appropriate professional experience.
Criteria & Application Procedure
A prospective fellow must demonstrate a strong commitment to
improving policy decisions in a networked society, exceptional
competence in some related area of communications policy, be
cognizant of the ways in which research may affect and be relevant to
policy making, communicate and work effectively with decision and
policy makers and others outside of the academic community, exhibit a
willingness and flexibility to tackle problems in a number of policy
areas; demonstrate sensitivity toward political, economic, and social
issues; and have some experience and/or strong interest in applying
knowledge toward the solution of problems in the area of
communications policy. Fellows from universities must demonstrate an
interest in translating academic research into policy initiatives.
The research performed under these fellowships should focus on
international legal developments, responses in other transition

of the Markle Foundation. Areas of interest to the Markle Foundation
include Internet governance, digital divide, consolidation, access
and choice, and redefining property.
Senior Fellows
Senior fellows should have a PhD or equivalent experience. The
prospective fellow should submit a research proposal and a statement

contribute to the main areas of interest outlined by Markle and the
Programme below. These fellowships offer up to US$2500 a month and
may last from one month to a maximum of two terms. Matched funding is
sought from the home-institution of the fellow.
Those who receive such fellowships should expect to produce
substantive output in the form of papers, articles, books, or
innovative workshops and online activities. The fellowships are also
meant to allow the fellow to explore complex comparative projects and
prospective fellows are encouraged to apply in partnership with other
fellows.

Junior fellows must have a BA and may be academics or professionals
involved in comparative media law and policy areas. Potential fellows
may also be students actively pursuing their Masters or Doctorate

interest outlined by the Markle Foundation and the Programme below.
These fellowships offer up to US$1,500 per month and may last from

the home-institution of the fellow.
