The United Nations Hq. in NYC has a bookstore that sells all their
reports. Generally they're in paperback form.
If they don't have a web site listing publications, a note could be sent
to: Attn.: Bookstore Manager, UN Bookstore, UN Secretariat Building,
First Avenue at 38th St. NY, NY. Oops I didn't look up the zip code
first, but doubt if you need it.
The UK newsletter DAA News has recent report on efforts to get UN to
deal with disability & disabled rights.
One would like to see the UN comprehensively, that is, inclusively,
summarize human rights situations... but I guess since it hasn't been
that many years since they took the gay-hating language out of their
"medical standards", Nor has it been many years since they created a
new medical clinic in their office building, that was designed with
barriers to people with mobility disabilites. (I happened to see the
atrchitect's plans for that when visiting a local building contractor's
office.)
The UN Hq. in NY as international territory is exempt from NYC's Local
Law 58 (access amendment to the building code), the ADA, and for that
matter local, state & federal human rights laws too, which can sometimes
be invoked in relation to built-environment access. The UN COULD as a
matter of good faith, declare that all of their renovations in their New
York City will voluntarily as part of their in-house design standards,
at least meet the LL-58 & the Access Guidelines of the ADA, if not some
more inclusive standard. Until they do that (and correct any other
anti-disabled policies / practices if they have any), they would of
course have little moral authority to talk about disability or ableism.
I recall from a UN tour I took years ago, that although the public often
perceives the UN's General Assembly as what it's all about, that really
over 90% of their effort is not in that area, but rather in areas of
development and assisting developing countries. (Where do we fit into
that?) And on that topic, their bookstore has so many reports, you
oculd spend many hours in there, just looking at the titles and tables
of contents.
