Eindhoven University of Technology is looking for candidates for a position of
Ph.D. STUDENT (AIO-Assistent in Opleiding) (V41051)
at the Faculty of Technology Management, department User-Centered
Engineering
Title: 3-D interaction with scientific data (Ph.D.)
Project Description
This goal of this project is to design, create and evaluate new interaction
techniques for exploring volumetric data. Contrary to usual images, that
contain a value for each position (pixel) in a planar region, volumetric
data have a value for each position (voxel) in a region of three-
dimensional (3-D) space. As a consequence, the complete data set cannot be
rendered simultaneously (i.e., as a single image), so that new ways of
exploring such data are required.
The new interaction styles will be implemented on an existing augmented
reality system, called the Visual Interaction Platform (VIP, see
http://www.ipo.tue.nl/vip3). Next to some existing 3-D tracking
technologies, based on ultrasonic sensors, alternative tracking
technologies, based on computer vision, will have to be applied and
tested. This implies that the candidate will have to be able to perform
software integration of existing technologies and algorithms.
In order to establish realistic requirements for a 3-D interaction
interface, access to specific applications with real users is deemed
essential. Therefore, this project will be performed in co-operation with
industrial partners like Philips Medical Systems (medical applications) and
Shell (geological explorations). Since a related post-doc project will
focus on a medical application, the Ph.D. will most likely address a
geological application.
In conclusion, the specific goals of this Ph.D. project are threefold:
1. To integrate and test alternative 3-D tracking technologies, in
order to enable new 3-D interaction styles;
2. To develop requirements for a 3-D interaction prototype based on an
analysis of the current work practice and formulated goals for a selected
industrial application (most likely in the field of geological
exploration), and to evaluate this prototype with potential users.
3. To implement this 3-D interaction prototype on the VIP platform.
Tasks
The Pd.D. student will conduct his/her research project within the
J.F.Schouten School for User-System Interaction Research (see
http://www.tm.tue.nl/jfschouten/main.htm for more information). This
project (as well as a related post-doc project) is sponsored by the IOP-MMI
(Innovative Research Programme on Man-Machine Interaction) of the Dutch
Ministry of Economical Affairs. Twice a year progress reports and
presentations have to be supplied to the IOP-MMI. The Ph.D. student will
also handle some contacts with the industrial partners (PMS and Shell) in
the project.
Required
The candidate should have a MSc degree in one of the following areas: human-
system interaction, computer science, electrical engineering or industrial
design. He/she is internationally oriented and is able to co-operate in a
multidisciplinary team.
Appointment and salary
We offer a position for a period of 4 years. PhD students will receive a
monthly salary of DFL 3,338 in their first year, which will rise to DFL
4,511 (gross) in the final (fourth) year. Eindhoven University of
Technology has an excellent package of attractive benefits for employees, a
child-care facility, and a modern sports complex. As part of an equal
opportunity scheme, women are explicitly requested to apply. Attaining a
PhD at Eindhoven University of Technology provides you with excellent
career opportunities.
