My non scientific experience of Helicopters in a remote semi-rural
setting is that they would be best used for secondary transfer,
returning the few road ambulances that we have to cover the emergency
work.
For us, a transfer to tertiary care is a minimum of 2 hours lost crew
and transfer team which causes no end of complaint from the surgeons
cooling their heels in the theatre coffee room and a stressed out ambulance
control.
It's not as sexy as primary response and doesn't get the fund raisers
their pictures but it would speed up transfers of ill patients and hopefully
improve outcomes where they are time critical
