WOMEN AND HOMELESSNESS IN EUROPE
PATHWAYS, SERVICES AND EXPERIENCES
Edited by Bill Edgar and Joe Doherty
Women have been neglected and marginalised in much contemporary
European housing policy and practice. Nowhere is this more apparent
than in the development of policies on homelessness. This volume
provides, for the first time, a picture of the nature and causes of
homelessness among women across European member states. It:
· considers the gender-specific issues contributing towards
homelessness among women in Europe;
· assesses the contribution of economic and social change to the risk
of homelessness;
· examines the changing composition of the female homeless population;
· describes the pattern and evaluates the effectiveness of service
provision available to homeless women;
· explores the experiences of homeless women using these services.

DIMINISHED RIGHTS
DANISH LONE MOTHER FAMILIES IN INTERNATIONAL CONTEXT
Valerie Polakow, Therese Halskov and Per Schultz Jørgensen
Denmark is one of the most progressive countries in terms of family
support policies. This book, however, reveals a backdrop of diminished
rights, inequalities and family violence in the lives of vulnerable
lone mothers. If this is the case in Denmark, what is the situation in
other countries, including the USA, the UK and other EU member states?
A qualitative study that documents the daily lives of vulnerable lone
mothers and their children in Denmark, Diminished rights:
· identifies lone mothers as part of an emerging post-modern underclass
in Denmark
· presents vivid case stories to illuminate the voices and experiences
of the women involved in the study
· highlights the disturbing prevalence of domestic violence that
pervades many lone mothers' lives
· raises questions around legal and child custody rights and the lack
of redress in a patriarchal justice system.
Policy and practice recommendations are made with wide-ranging
applications for an international audience of policy makers,
practitioners and academics.
