Perhaps the slave trade is irrelevant to the question of emigrants to the
American colonies. The point I was trying to make was that Bristol was a
well-developed port with direct links to the Americas - and elsewhere.
Liverpool was not so developed, so Bristol would be the obvious option,
other than London.
Didn't Bedford have a thriving Non-Conformist community in the 17th century?
Maybe Non-conformist emigrants got a better deal from like-minded people in
Bristol rather than being ripped off by Londoners. Nihil mutat...
