Paul asked if metal detecting should be treated as an event, and Mike raised
the issue of different terminology standards in use betwen SMRs
From the data standards point of view the position as I understand it is
that ALGAO have approved for members use a hierarchical list of event type
indexing terms which includes the following two terms:-
Term : metal detecting survey
Scope Note: Systematic measurement of distribution of concealed metal
artefacts by means of their electromagnetic properties.
Parent term: geophysical survey
Term : metal detector use
Scope Note: Unsystematic use of equipment to detect concealed metal
artefacts, including their removal from the ground.
Parent Term: non archaeological intervention
Clearly what Paul is refering to is the first of these. Speaking as an
outsider I would personally have no problem regarding this as an Event under
the current thinking on the EMA model.
The ALGAO list will form part of the INSCRIPTION terminology framework (see
www.inscription.org.uk). At present I'm awaiting final details from ALGAO to
include in the INSCRIPTION web site. In the meantime I believe that copies
of the list are available from ALGAO.
Best wishes
