I'm trying to follow up a reference that Louis Montrose made in his paper
at Cambridge last month. Montrose cited Patrick Collinson to the effect
that (a) citizens were concealed within Elizabethan subjects, (b)
republican ideas were accessible to Parliament and implicit in their
speeches, and (c) Spenser's republicanism in SC was "barely suppressed."
Does anyone recognize this? Have been looking through Collinson's writings
for several weeks now with no luck; his essay on "The Monarchical Republic
of Queen Elizabeth I" sounded promising, but comes to very different
conclusions from those that Montrose describes. Nothing under Collinson for
SC in recent numbers of what used to be known as the Spenser Newsletter...
