Dear Roger

In the hope that it may ease your search slightly, or
that of your local library, you might like to look at
the following website which is devoted to the various
translations of the Arabian Nights, as well as texts
from some of them.
http://www.capitalnet.com/~jcbyers/
It contains the following Comparison of the Contents
of Various Editions of Arabian Nights, to many of
which Richard Haythornthwaite drew attention.
Rev. George Fyler Townsend The Arabian Nights'
Entertainments nd. c1867
John Payne The Book of The Thousand Nights and One
Night (9 Volumes) 1882-4
Tales From The Arabic (3 Volumes)
Alaeddin and the Enchanted Lamp
Richard Burton The Book of The Thousand Nights and a
Night (10 Volumes) 1885
Supplemental Nights (6 Volumes) 1886-8
Jonathan Scott The Arabian Nights Entertainments
(Aldine Edition, 4 Volumes) 1890
Andrew Lang The Arabian Nights 1898
Edward Lane/Stanley Lane-Poole Stories from the
Thousand and One Nights 1909-14
E. Powys Mathers The Book of The Thousand Nights and
One Night (8 Volumes) 1923
Detmold The Arabian Nights 1924
N. J. Dawood Tales From The Thousand And One Nights
1954, 57
Husain Hadday The Arabian Nights 1992
The Arabian Nights II 1998
Since Mr Byers and his team have done so much work in
this field, it might be worth asking whether they have
come across the phrase. I still haven't been able to
find it, but will keep looking.
With best Regards,
David Page, Harrow
