The following post has just been advertised, funded by the new grant from
the UK National Lottery that I have already announced on this list. NB it
requires specific database skills, NOT training in GIS; the project also
funds two GIS posts but these have already been filled. We will shortly be
advertising another post for a librarian or information scientist, who will
work with the database developer and other members of the team to implement
various information standards.
Best wishes,
Humphrey Southall

Great Britain Historical GIS/Gazetteer/Atlas Project
Department of Geography, University of Portsmouth
ORACLE DEVELOPER
Salary: £20,932 - £32,265 (for an exceptional candidate)
Reference: RENV 0031
Closing Date: 31 August 2001
The Great Britain Historical Geographical Information System uniquely
combines historical information about every town and village with a
systematic spatial framework for the study of Britain's past. The New
Opportunities Fund, a National Lottery distributor, is now funding both
extension of the resource and creation of free public web access, in
collaboration with the British Library.
You must have in-depth knowledge of the Oracle 7/8 database and
toolset, especially web access facilities, and experience of Oracle
development using PL/SQL or Java. We must support a number of XML-
based information standards. Further training as an Oracle DBA will be
provided.
Working within a small team including GIS specialists and an information
scientist, you must be able to both write to detailed specifications and
provide ideas for the system’s overall development. By the project’s
end, you will have contributed very visibly to a resource used by life-
long learners throughout Britain.
Further particulars are available from Personnel Services, University
House, Winston Churchill Avenue, Portsmouth PO1 2UP.
