I post the following with no comment.
"A pupil attending a local school contacted me in May
2001. He was having severe problems with his Economics
AS level as there had been prolonged teacher absences
plus he disliked the current teacher. The pupil was 17
and also studying English and Mathematics at AS level.
It was plain that he had little Economics knowledge
and was fairly demotivated in general.
I suggested he took Business Studies A level....in two
weeks time. This would enable him to leave school and
'score one up' as well. His Mother is a teacher (of
Biology) so I spent some time with her too convincing
her that passing Business Studies A level was a
definite possibility.
The pupil continued to have lessons in Economics AS
and with the possibility of an A level too seemed to
put more work in.
In all he had 4 hours of tuition in Economics AS plus
4 hours tuition in Business Studies. We also exchanged
emailsconcerning Business Studies and he joined the
Internet Business Studies class for two weeks.
To reassure his parents that I was not just trying to
get money from them when in fact an A level for a 17
year old in 2 weeks was impossible I said I would
expect no payment unless he scored a grade C or above
in the A level.
Grade E in Business Studies as most people know, is
not that difficult but C or above is 'respectable'.
Today his results came out. He passed with a grade C
after his four lessons (plus the internet class). This
was someone dissatisfied with school and AS levels.
There's a moral there.
