Some time ago, on this board I inquired about conditions at the
Central
State Archive of the Dagestan Republic in Makhachkala. At the time, no one
had any information. In the early July, I had chance to visit this archive
for two days and got some information, which could be of interest to the
list members.
The TsGA RD (Tsentralnyi Gosudarstvennyi Arkhiv Respubliki Dagestan)
is
located at ulitsa M. Gadzhieva, dom 172, Makhachkala, Respublika Dagestan,
Rossia 367032. Director is Ms. Gajdarbekova, Bajazat Kazanbievna. At the
same address, both the Dagestan's State Committee for Archives and the
ZAGS
(Vital Statistics) Archive are located.
The Chairwoman of the State Committee is Ms. Churlanova, Patimat
Kurbanovna. The Deputy Chairwoman (main contact person) is Ms. Urdasheva,
Luiza Omarovna, phone 011-7-8722-68-56-88.
The Central archive has a reading room, which is open daily Monday
through Friday 10:00 to 16:30. To get access to the reading room, you have
to write a letter to the Director, explaining the goal of your research,
and
get her approval along with a pass (propusk). At the reading room, the
Archive Guides (putevoditel') are available. The <opis'> files for the
pre-1917 period are availabe at the reading room, too.
To order a particular <delo>, you fill in order form and they bring
your
order the next day. Since I was the first foreigner ever visiting this
archive, the administration, as soon as they heard of my intention to
visit
their facilities, got in touch with the RosGlavArchive for instructions.
The
verbal instructions over the phone were simple: tread him as everybody
else,
but charge for regular copying $3 per page or $5 for express (same day).
FYI, the regular charge for copying for everybody else at this archive is
4
roubles (US12 cents). This policy, of course, limitted my copying to only
two pages.
Nevertheless, I learned the process of copying at the TsGA RD. First,
in the delo you're working with, you find the pages you'd like to be
copied
and insert bookmarks. Then you take the delo and go to the accounting
department to look for a clerk, who can process your order. You provide
your
full name and number of copies. This and some other information is entered
manually twice on the main receipt and on the stub. You pay cash in rubles
on the spot. The clerk takes your money and goes to anoter office, where
the
register (or safe) is and comes back with any change and the stamped
receipt. You take your delo and the receipt to the copying lab, where the
procedure is about the same. The technician enters your name, etc. in the
log and advises when to come back for the copy...
Although the procedures were rather cumbesome, the personnel was most
helpfull and frendly.
If someone has any questions about this archive, I'll be glad to
answer,
if I can...
