> PRESS RELEASE.
> SOCIAL CONNECTIONS.
>
> A group of people is organizing a forum, funded by the Department of Human
Services, to be held on Saturday, October 20th in the Eastern Region. It
will examine ways of enabling people with disabilities to socialize.
>
> The group, loosely allied with the Accsex Coalition, and facilitated by David Craig from Vic Nord, (Victorian Network on Recreation and Disability) consists of people with and without disabilities.
>
> Patsy Frawley, freelance worker who focuses on issues of friendship, human
relations and sexuality in the lives of people with disabilities, will be the moderator on the day.
>
> She will open the day by presenting a number of different models of social
interaction in the first part of the day. These will include member-run diners clubs, sporting organizations, a neighbourhood center run program, a discussion group about
about the power and meaning of friendship, and so on.
>
> Participants will be allowed to discuss and examine these and other models
in an attempt to discover what would best fit with their lifestyles and
financial situations.
>
> After lunch, they will then be asked to think seriously about how they could fascilitate
their preferred option/options in the Eastern Region.
>
> The organizers are therefore hoping that most people who attend the day will come from this area. However, this does not mean that people from other regions, entrepreneurs in their own areas, should not apply. The venue chosen can hold about 80 people.
>
> People with a variety of disabilities will be welcomed. Our group is hoping to give people with disabilities themselves some impetus and ideas they can take away with them to work toward change to canvass more recreational possibilities in their lives if they so desire.
>
> Family members and carers will also be welcome.
>
> The forum will be held at the sumptuous Federation Estate in Ringwood
situated behind the old primary school, in Greenwood Ave. Registration will
be at 9.30 for a 10.00 start. The formal proceedings will finish at 5.00
and will be followed by a Bar-b-cue dinner.
