ALT-C 2001 Pre-Conference Meeting

ALT & SURF collaboration: MUTUAL STUDY TRIPS to the United Kingdom and the
Netherlands
Introduction
Dutch people working in educational IT are very interested in what is happening
in the UK concerning IT innovation Higher Education. This interest extends to
the macro, meso and micro levels within institutes for Higher Education, at
(collaborative) innovation projects, umbrella organisations or councils and at
governmental policy. The changing position of students, teachers, business and
HE organisations, educational development and the effectiveness of
collaborative efforts in relation with IT innovation are issues worthy of
attention.
SURF and ALT are planning a study visit for up to 100 Dutch travellers to the
UK. For 3 to 4 days of their one-week stay we will split them into three or
more groups of about 25 people. Each group will visit a different institute or
organisation. Each visit to an institute could have one or two plenary sessions
after which the 25 split up into smaller teams to visit the most relevant
people, projects, and areas that will best illustrate how innovation with IT is
conducted within the institute at the macro, meso and micro level. The idea is
to keep the teams small enough to encourage real contact and discussions. After
one week all participants will have visited at least three to four HE
institutes and/or have spoken to relevant people. The Dutch people who will
visit the UK will also be prepared to share their results, beliefs and fears
openly with their hosts.
Afterwards a report or case study on each institute will be written, providing
us with lessons learned and other findings and insights.
We know that there is also an interest in the UK for what is happening in the
Netherlands, and we are willing to provide a wide range of Dutch HE institutes,
innovation projects, umbrella organisations or councils to receive UK visitors
during a return study trip later in the year 2002.
The pre-conference workshop, that is described in more detail below, is meant
to get to know each other and to weave the first threads of a Dutch-UK HE
network by building a List of Visits.
Purpose of the pre-conference workshop:
* invite and inspire UK institutes to participate in a closer collaboration
between UK and Dutch institutes on innovation, starting by agreeing on mutual
study visits to learn, share and discuss.
* explore ideas for interesting themes/places/projects for the Dutch to visit
in the UK (spring 2002) and themes/places/projects to be visited by UK
travellers in return (autumn 2002?)
Invited participants
Representatives of all levels within HE institutes, projects or umbrella
organisations or councils, who are interested in sharing experience and views
with Dutch Higher Education, and would like to participate in mutual study
visits, as a visitor to Dutch places/projects of interest and/or as a hosting
institute/project for Dutch visitors.
The Mutual Study Visits project is supported by ALT and the SURF Foundation.
