Subject: [maydaywhiteoveralls] URGENT APPEAL FOR MUMIA ABU JAMAL

MUMIA ABU JAMAL is innocent, he has been on death row for 19 years and has
never had the opportunity of a fair trial. His lawyers have never been given
the chance to present to the courts the
overwhelming evidence that would finally prove this man's innocence.
On August 17, 2001 Mumia will be on trial again and hopefully this
time it will be possible to make some advances towards his
release.

We need everyone to spread the word as well as send faxes, email and
phone the U. S. Embassy. Let them know that in Mumia's court case we
will accept only one course of action: justice and immediate
liberation of our brother Mumia Abu jamal.

Some latest newswires about Mumia:

Stop the Legal Lynching
of Mumia Abu-Jamal!

Mumia Abu-Jamal is an African-American journalist
now on death row in Pennsylvania. Abu-Jamal was
sentenced to death in 1982 as a result of a thorougly rigged
trial in which he was convicted of shooting a Philadelphia
policeman. The prosecution demanded the death sentence on
the basis of Abu-Jamal's political beliefs.

There is a lot at stake for the people in this case. Think
how the people will be emboldened to fight back when Mumia
walks free, and then think about the alternative. We cannot
allow them to execute an innocent man, nor silence an
unrepentant Black political prisoner who is the voice of the
       voiceless.

Mumia's appeal has been denied by the Pennsylvania Supreme
Court. On October 13, 1999, PA Governor Ridge signed a new
death warrant against Mumia. Mumia's attorneys have filed a
habeus corpus petition in Federal district court and the
Federal
judge has issued a stay of execution while that petition is
       being considered.

        PRESS RELEASE
        August 14, 2001
        FREE MUMIA ABU-JAMAL COALITION, NYC
        Contact: Suzanne Ross (212)927-2924

In a surprise move, strongly reminiscent of
        his original trial, Mumia
Abu-Jamal has just been ordered to be
kept away from his upcoming August
17th court hearing. On July 27, 2001, Judge
        Pamela Dembe ordered Mumia
Abu-Jamal to appear in the Pennsylvania
State Court of Common Pleas. Yet,
yesterday, August 13, 2001, the Court
        Administrator of this same court,
Joseph J. DiPrimio, the Court Administrator
        of the First Judicial District,
stated that Mumia should not be
transported down to Philadelphia, as there
will not be any room in the Philadelphia
prisons to house Mumia. Of course
we know that in 1995-6, when Mumia was
present in the courtroom, he was
actually housed in a prison outside of
        Philadelphia.

They already picked a date that Marcus
        Garvey supporters always celebrate
with a yearly parade in Harlem; that
Sharpton and the Vieques supporters are
gathering on the release of Sharpton from
jail; that Maddox has a annual
        founding anniversary dinner; that students
are out on vacation and many
professionals are out of town on vacation.

With all that we've been able to mobilize
many people across the east coast
to Chicago and info Canada, and have
even organized a delegation from France

It is clear that the forces that want to see
        Mumia executed did not expect
us to be able to mobilize this kind of
        enthusiastic response for Mumia that
is clearly evident, and are now trying to
        derail us, once again, by
announcing that Mumia will not be in court
        on the 17th. The international
concerned family and friends of m has
declared that this is an outrageous
move by the government, and that once
again this system is determined to
deny Mumia the right to be present in the
courtroom when his life is at
stake. For ourselves, for our movement, for
        all Mumia supports, for all
anti-death penalty activists, for all justice
        and freedom-loving people, we
demand that Mumia have the right to hear
        the legal proceedings about his
case. We urge all activists and supporters
to come to Philadelphia in even
larger numbers, because if Mumia is NOT
there, then we must stand not only
        WITH Mumia, but FOR Mumia.

All out to Philadelphia on the 17th. Ona
        Move.

        ==== original message ======
On August 17th Mumia Abu-Jamal will be in
the State Courts, PLEASE STAND WITH HIM!
There will be a hearing on August 17 to
decide whether or not Mumia's new lawyers
will be accepted and whether or not Mumia
will have a PCRA (Post Conviction Relief
Appeal) hearing. We are nearing the end of
the rope in this battle, Judge Yohn has
already proven that he will not do justice.
The time for action is now. Please make
arrangements to be in Philadelphia for
        August 17th and 18th.

The following people will be standing with
        Mumia:

        Kathleen Cleaver
        Ossie Davis
        Sonia Sanchez
        Mos Def
        Talib Kweli
Members of the British Parliament and
        French Deligation
Lenox Hynes (Lawyer for Nelson Mandela)
        (more to be announced)

        WILL YOU BE THERE?

The rally begins at 9am on the east side of
cityhall on the 17th. After the rally we will
march to the federal building to send judge
Yohn a strong message that we aren't
acceptin this injustice. At 6pm there will be
an informative program on the MOVE 9:23
years of unjust imprisonment followed by a
hip-hop show to benefit MOVE at the
Friends Center (1515 Cherry St.). On the
18th there will be a massive march around
        the city for Mumia.

Please spread the word and organize
people to come to Philadelphia. For more
info go to http://www.mumia.org or call
        (215)476-8812.
