Union and Cultural Identities in Eighteenth-Century Scotland

Centre for the History of Ideas in Scotland in association with the
University of Edinburgh Centre for the History of the Book and the Museum
of Scotland
In this, ECSSS's first-ever Edinburgh conference, the theme of union has
been chosen to reflect the changing perspectives on eighteenth-century
Scotland since the advent fo the modern Scottish Parliament in 1999. Paper
proposals will be particularly welcome on the following themes:
Transatlantic Exchanges; The Production of Culture; The Scottish
Enlightenment and History; Scotland and Ireland; and The Book and the Book
Trade. Papers will be 20-25 minutes long.
The conference will feature an excursion to Paxton House in Berwickshire,
with talks on its fine library and picture gallery; an evening of Burns
songs with violin and cello accompaniment at St. Cecilia's Hall in the
Edinburgh Cowgate; and an exhibit at Edinburgh University Library.
