Theory of Literary Reception: The Act of Reading and After
A Colloquium in Honour of Prof. Wolfgang Iser
at the
Institute of Germanic Studies
(organised by The Centre for Reception of German Thought in Britain and The
Reception of British Authors in Europe Project)
This Colloquium marks the opening of a new collaborative enterprise in
Reception Studies, between the Research Project on the Reception of British
Authors in Europe, and the newly founded Centre for the Reception of
German/Austrian/Swiss Literature. Appropriately, given his distinguished
and pioneering contributions to the subject, our first Visiting Senior
Fellow is Professor Wolfgang Iser, and he will give the first annual
Lecture in Reception Studies on the opening evening of the Colloquium. The
aim of the Colloquium is to assess the impact of Iser's work in Reception
Theory on the fields of German, English and Comparative Literature and to
consider the present state of play in the field.
Other speakers include: Dr Lucy Newlyn, whose recent book Reading,
Writing, and Romanticism. The Anxiety of Reception (OUP, 2000) is a winner
this year of the Crawshay Prize of the British Academy; Dr Elinor Shaffer,
Director of the Research Project on Reception of British Authors in Europe
and deputy Director of the Centre; Dr Susanne Schmid, Co- Editor of The
Reception of Shelley in Europe and a short-term Fellow at the Centre this
autumn; Prof. Geert Lernout, Director of the James Joyce Centre, Antwerp
and Editor of The Reception of Joyce in Europe; and Prof. Robert Weninger,
author of Literarische Konventionen and contributor on the Reception of
Joyce in Germany; and Prof. Martin Swales, author of many publications on
