PhD Studentship:
Supporting Vicarious Learning in Remote Collaboration via Videoconferncing
The will take part in the context of an e-learning project that has been
agreed between BT and the National Science Foundation of China. The aim of
the project is to carry out collaborative research and learning activities
between BT and some of its collaborating UK universities, and a small number
of Chinese universities. Existing videoconferencing and web-based tools will
be used to support real-time and asynchronous interaction between tutors and
learners working on a number of different topics.
The aim of the PhD research is to investigate the potential of vicarious
learning (re-use of educational dialogues - Mayes & Fowler, 1999) in
electronically mediated research and learning activities. The student will
(a) identify, specify, implement and evaluate mechanisms for identifying and
extracting suitable dialogues from recorded videoconferencing sessions; and
(b) investigate ways of augmenting the dialogues (through annotations and
links with other electronic learning resources) to allow vicarious learning to
take place. The research will build on previous and current research
activities at in the Dept of Computer Science, UCL, and and BT Adastral Park.
We have been investigating the use of videonconferencing to support
small-group learning since 1994 (as part of BT-funded project ReLaTe and
UKERNA-funded project PIPVIC). A current PhD research project has developed
principles and mechanisms for capture and re-use of dialogues in face-to-face
tutorials, and provide easy means of making these avalaible to other other
students via the Web.
Applicants should either have a first degree in computing, solid software
development skills, and be interested in pedagogical aspects of computer-based
teaching; or come from a pedagogical/teaching background and have experience
in developing educational software, in particular multimedia. Applicants must
have a first or upper second class honours degree, or a higher degree. The
award is at CASE level and open to UK or EU country citizens.
If you are interested in applying for the studentship, please email Dr Angela
Sasse in the Dept of Computer Science.
