Hi Craig
I can't answer your question, but for what it's worth I share your
frustration. There seem to be a lot of rules for rules' sake, both in the UK
and Australia. I've got MRCP/FRCSEd/FFAEM but they're worth peanuts here in
Australia (where I occasionally feel like a second class citizen without
permanent residency - but that's irrelevant, I just needed to get it off my
chest!). I was tempted to sit the FACEM for the simple reason that from what
I've seen of British and Australian emergency physicians, the FACEM wins
hands downs as a marker of CLINICAL KNOWLEDGE (words chosen carefully).
That's not to say I'm not proud of my FFAEM, which I found tough, but the
clinical bit is only 25% of the test and the questions asked were no harder
(some a lot easier) than entry-level exams. I think the UK needs more
hands-on clinically excellent EPs (to accompany all the others who subscribe
to this list!), and there are some unfilled posts, so it makes no sense to
me. What would happen if you applied directly to hospitals for jobs? I
believe there are other Australasians working as ED consultants in the UK.
Perhaps they're lurking on the list? As always John sums up the wider issues
pretty accurately.
Best wishes
Cliff Reid
