GLASGOW CALEDONIAN UNIVERSITY
DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTING
RESEARCH ASSISTANT - EPSRC Distributed information Management Programme:
RAED Project
Fixed Term for Two Years
Grade/ Salary:
Starting salary spinal point 7, £20,267, on Research Assistant Grade RA1A
(£17,451 - £26,229, under review).
Main purpose of the Post
------------------------
This post is funded by the EPSRC's Distributed Information Management
programme, to undertake a systems case study which will address the
intersection of two lines of work:
(a)Role-based Access Control for Distributed Information Resources, and
(b)Collaborative Development, Deployment and Evolution of Tertiary Courseware.
Systems research in Information Technology and Computer Science requires
significant applications case studies in order to validate new
architectures and concepts. Resources and their collaborating owners and
users are, increasingly, distributed across multiple independent
organisations. This creates a significant requirement for Access Control
that recognises the evolving and dynamic nature of the information
resources, the collaborative nature of the roles, appointments and
processes by which their creation and evolution is managed, and the
event-driven aspects of the requisite access control policies. OASIS is
an access control approach for open, interworking services in a
distributed environment modelled as domains of services. Services may be
developed independently but service level agreements allow their secure
interoperation. The Distributed Tertiary Courseware scenario, with the
management of tutorial activities across multiple universities and/or
workplace-learning client companies, will be used as the context for
studying the extent to which Oasis facilitates the management of evolution
and change in a collaborative, distributed context.
The research is being undertaken within the Department's CSCW and
Distributed Applications research group, in association with the Opera
research group at the Cambridge University Computing Laboratory, and the
University of Strathclyde. The project funding includes a significant
amount for regular exchange visits between Glasgow and Cambridge. In
addition to the Research Assistant, one university-funded doctoral student
will be associated with the project.
Main Duties
-----------
1. Undertake research on Role-Based Access Control within the context of
the project Source information on relevant topics.
2. Building upon requirements studies previously carried out in the
MANTCHI project, design and develop access controls, and develop or integrate
end-user tools, to support the implementation and deployment of the
MANTCHI Atoms and Trails model for Distributed Tertiary Courseware.
3. Write reports as required for project use or external dissemination.
4. Participate in exchanges with the Cambridge University Computing
Laboratory
5. Attend EPSRC DIM workshops
Skills, Knowledge and Experience
--------------------------------
1. Preferably should have a PhD in Computing or a related discipline; or
should be close to completing such a PhD, preferably related to
distributed systems.
2. Must show evidence of development capability (e.g. C++, Java) and
knowledge of distributed systems technologies (e.g. CORBA)
3. Must have excellent organisational and communication skills in
particular good written English
