The figures show only very small changes in the number of low-income groups
between 1996/7 and 1999/2000. The number of children below the poverty
threshold fell by only 200,000 to 4.3 million. The number of poor
pensioners remained at 2.6 million. Overall, those on less than half
average equivalised incomes fell only slightly from 14.1 million to 14
million.
Other statistics include -- 31 pc of children living below 60 pc of median incomes
(AHC), against 32 pc in 1999/2000 (31 pc in 1995/6). Pensioners 27 pc below
60 pc of median, against 26% in 1996/7 (25pc in 1995/6).
