Professor Ian Gough suggested that I should send a message to the social policy
mailbox.
I am using data from a Social Science study conducted in 1986 entitled the
Social Change and Economic Life Initiative (SCELI). This study examined a
sample of the population in six British urban areas that differed in their
industrial histories, traditional occupational structures, and mix of public
and private sectors. The locations examined were Aberdeen, Coventry, Kirkcaldy,
Northampton, Rochdale and Swindon.
As a complement to my research with this dataset, I am looking for individual
studies of each area, which provide an account of the changing nature of
employment and
community during the decades before and after the SCELI study. I want to use
such material in order to place in historical context the patterns of
deprivation that SCELI reveals, and if possible relate them to the processes of
industrial and community change that are under way. I'm looking for people who
can advise on any local studies of the six respective areas that provide this
sort of context. This might involve documents or reports produced by members
of local Universities or local authorities, for the time period in question. I
have of course already written to each of the local authorities in question,
but they do not seem to have long memories, and they tend to offer only the
latest reports (if any) on the current situation.
I do hope that someone can help on this matter.
