I've used Egan to reference this point in the past. My copy of "The Skilled
Helper" is the 1990 fourth edition, and he talks about this issue on page
124.
Also, Schaap, Bennum, Schindler and Hoogduin (1993) "The therapeutic
relationship in behavioural psychotherapy" (Wiley) may make the same point.
