The GIS Research Centre at the University of Glamorgan has a number of
vacancies for those interested in post-graduate study for the award of a
PhD.
In particular, we are looking to recruit full-time post-graduates working
under the supervision of Prof. Gary Higgs, Dr Andrew Ware and Dr Dave
Kidner, in the areas of:
Spatial Modelling, Mapping and Analysis of Health and Crime Data
These two related projects are both aimed at describing, quantifying and
explaining geographical variations in these data and other additional
variables (e.g. deprivation, demographics, etc.) at the small-area scale.
The projects both present many challenges, especially with respect to the
specific data sets used. For example, the collection of suitable data, the
accuracy or confidence of these data, reconciling differences in the
geography or georeferencing of datasets, organising and storing many
different data sets, ethical issues of handling sensitive data, and the
application of novel spatial modelling techniques, such as neural networks.
One of the aims of this research is to identify the important spatial
variables that have an influence on any clusters or hot spots and to develop
predictive tools which can recognise future problem areas.
The successful candidates are expected to be aware of some of these issues,
and have some previous experience of using and applying GIS. Preference may
be given to those holding a GIS, Computing, Geography, or Mathematics (or
related) degree (1st or 2i) or MSc, but applicants should have programming
experience.
Due to the nature of our funding, these positions are only available to UK
or EU citizens. In return, we offer the following remuneration per year,
for a maximum of 3 years:
* research grant / bursary (of approx. £7,000 p.a. tax-free),
* all registration fees,
* teaching / tutoring work (£27.31 per hour) for up to 6 hours a week
during term time, subject to the candidate's experience, plus
* an additional stipend for other duties.
Informal enquiries regarding these positions should be addressed to:
Prof. Gary Higgs, Tel: +44 (0)1443-483619, E-mail: [log in to unmask]
Dr. Dave Kidner, Tel: +44 (0)1443-482647, E-mail: [log in to unmask]
