Conference announcement/second call for papers
Valency in Practice
Symposium, Reading 21.-22.9.01
Valency occupies a special place in German linguistics. It not only features prominently
in newer grammars of German but has inspired a wealth of lexicographic work, often of a
contrastive nature. The concept has also triggered a fierce theoretical discussion over
the last 15 years which has, to the surprise of some, strengthened rather than weakened
its central place in grammatography.
The organisers of the symposium (Ian Roe, Klaus Fischer, Alan Cornell) are currently
compiling a valency dictionary for English-speaking learners of German and have also
worked in the field of valency in English. The symposium will address both applied and
theoretical valency issues, with a particular emphasis on lexicographic and contrastive
questions. It will bring together researchers from Hungary, Poland, Japan, Belgium,
Ireland, Germany and Britain including Helmut Schumacher (Institut für Deutsche Sprache,
Mannheim), Vilmos Ágel (Szeged, Hungary), Klaas Willems/Ann Coene (Ghent, Belgium) and
Jon West (Newcastle, Britain). There is still room for one, possibly two, additional
papers.
