ALLIANCE OF UNIVERSITIES FOR DEMOCRACY

Twelfth Annual Conference: Transforming Higher Education and Civil Society
November 4 - 7, 2001
Belgrade, Federal Republic of Yugoslavia

Call for Papers

Founded in 1990, the Alliance of Universities for Democracy (AUDEM) is a
consortium of American and Central and East European universities united
for the common purpose of supporting institutions of higher learning in
Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) in their transition from suppression in
centrally-planned economies to their democratic roles in market-driven
economies. Currently, AUDEM's members number over 110 institutions of
higher learning in CEE and the United States. (For more information about
the Alliance and its Members, please go to www.aubg.bg/audem)

Students, Faculty, and Administrators from institutions of higher education
throughout the world are invited to attend the upcoming 12th Annual
Conference of the Alliance. AUDEM conferences are conducive to making new
friends and exchanging ideas about and solutions to university-oriented
problems.

This year the Conference will be held in Belgrade. This choice reflects our
commitment to link educational institutions across national borders, and
open up territories that have been isolated or depressed in their
development. We are, therefore, particularly pleased to announce Belgrade
as the 2001 venue.

As with previous years, some financial support will be available to cover
attendance-related costs of participants from countries of Central and
Eastern Europe who are not funded from their institutions or other sources
within their countries. AUDEM will review applications from CEE candidates
and make decisions regarding the exact amount of need-based funding to be
awarded to individual applicants. Application procedures will be announced
at the beginning of August.

The exact hotel location of the Conference as well as the 2001 conference
fees will be announced by July 15, 2001. Please note that the language of
the Conference is English.

CONFERENCE THEME:

This year the overall theme of the Conference is Transforming Higher
Education and Civil Society, reflected in the following three broad tracks
(see below for possible panel titles and topics):

1. Advancing Human Rights
Human Rights have been a concern of AUDEM from the time of its foundation.
This year we encourage papers that expand on the relations between higher
education and civil society.

2. Reforming Higher Education
What are the challenges of educating for global citizenship? Analyses of
theoretical and practical issues are welcome, as well as discussion of the
interaction of the University and the community.

3. Construction and Reconstruction of Democracy
More than a decade after the fall of the communist regimes in the countries
of Central and Eastern Europe, as well as the developments in the Balkans
and within the Newly Independent States, we need to look back and review
what have we learned since 1989 and reflect on the dilemmas and challenges
education is facing in the current setting.

CONTRIBUTED PAPERS

We welcome discussions and contributions that relate to the general theme
of the Conference, and in particular want to encourage young scholars and
junior faculty to participate.

Time allotted will be about 20 - 25 minutes for each paper plus a limited
time for questions.

The deadline for receipt of papers, including titles, authors' names,
institutional affiliation and addresses, and an abstract of 100-200 words
is October 5. Papers received after October 5 are not likely to be included
in the program.

These contributions should be sent to the Program Chair for this
Conference, Dr. Julia M. Watkins, President, American University in
Bulgaria at:
AUDEM
American University in Bulgaria
Blagoevgrad 2700
Bulgaria.
