Together Against Corruption: Designing Strategies, Assessing Impact,
Reforming Corrupt Institutions
10th International Anti-Corruption Conference in Prague
Here it comes again: the much-awaited World Cup of conferences for
anti-corruption stakeholders. The 10th
International Anti-Corruption Conference (IACC) will be held in Prague,
Czech Republic from 8-11 October,
2001.
This biannual event, inaugurated in Washington, DC in 1983, will turn its
focus this year to forging
creative and practical solutions to corruption. Last taking place in Durban,
South Africa in 1999, the
Conference succeeded in assembling over 1600 delegates from 135 countries,
including a record number of
USAID-sponsored participants. This attendance represented a significant
advance over the previous
IACC in Lima in 1997, and underlines not only the increasing recognition of
the need to address
corruption as a global issue, but also the role the IACC plays as the
foremost international forum for
discussion among stakeholders drawn from all sectors.
This year, in particular, the Conference has been designed to take a
focused, programmatic approach to
the elimination of corruption. The organizers hope both to draw and to
benefit participants with unique
and diverse experiences in institutional reform and fighting corruption.
Whether from governments,
businesses, local NGOs or universities, those who bring with them a success
story in fighting corruption
or a viable, tested plan for reform are likely to use the IACC both to
create valuable networks and to
contribute significantly to a forum on what works and what doesn't work in
anti-corruption programming. The
emergence from Prague of a robust and pragmatic commitment to fighting
corruption depends on the
presence of such a variety of voices, as well as the sharing of practical
and effective approaches.
