Libraries without Walls 4 The Delivery of Library Services to Distant
Users Distributed Resources - Distributed Learning

An international conference organised by CERLIM - The Centre for
Research in Library and Information Management

For full details visit the conference website at:
http://www.cerlim.ac.uk/conf/lww4/

Lifelong learning is becoming a reality throughout the world,
requiring that learning opportunities be delivered to all citizens in
their locality, at work or at home, and resulting in the restructuring
of higher education. Libraries will be called upon to find innovative
and imaginative ways to support such learning, and to treat 'distant'
learners on an equal footing with those on-campus. The 'Libraries
without Walls' conferences address this important theme.

The first three conferences, held in Greece in 1995, 1997 and 1999,
were highly successful. For the 2001 Conference papers have been
submitted from the UK, Europe and North America around the
following themes:

* Libraries and virtual learning environments * Online enquiry
services for remote users * Virtual libraries and national-level
initiatives * User behaviour and training in the distributed
environment * The public library's role in serving distant users *
Content development for the virtual environment * Key technology
issues in delivering services to distant users

The keynote address - 'Behind-the-screen' thinking: What's
invisible still matters, doesn't it? - will be delivered by Professor
Liz Burge, Professor, Adult Education, University of New
Brunswick, Atlantic Canada and Visiting Professor, Mid Sweden
University, Sweden.

The Conference is held at the Hotel Delphinia, Molyvos, Lesvos,
Greece and begins with registration and dinner on Friday 14
September from 9.00 p.m. and ends with breakfast on Tuesday18
September.

The total cost is £345 sterling, which includes:- * Registration and
attendance at the Conference * Accommodation for four nights with
breakfast * Registration Dinner on 14 September and Conference
Dinner on 16 September * Lunch and refreshments during breaks in
the programme at the hotel during the three Conference days

The cost of the Conference does not include flights. Some
transport to and from Mytilene airport may be provided at popular
times: at other times delegates will need to take a taxi.
